Sometimes you want the trick-or-treaters to hang around the candy bowl, and sometimes it’s better to move them along – before they eat everything! With this clever animated candy crate, Angat K. of London, United Kingdom, can do a little of both.
Angat has made it appear that trick-or-treaters may not only be grabbing candy on Halloween night. Inside this candy crate are a few mysterious additions – at least, that’s what it looks like. Might the costumed children on Angat’s doorstep inadvertently grab one of these mysterious creatures? Do they bite?
To create this compelling prop, Angat is using a technique that many decorators have deployed over the years: Embedding a computer tablet (or even an unused smartphone) inside a physical prop to give it an added – and creepy – dimension. It’s a simple and effective way to add some dynamism to any prop.
For instance, Sahara Sears built a possessed spell book using this technique. Or, decorators like Michael Hehir will create gravestones with a tablet placed inside. And two-time AtmosFAN Scott Bell was honored for his clever inhabited candy crate, too.
Although many AtmosFX Decorations can be utilized for this purpose, the common denominator in the above creations is the Eerie Eyes Decoration Collection. Angat makes great use of the leering peepers for the candy bowl. But there’s more.

If having unknown creeps peeking out of the trick-or-treat bowl wasn’t enough, Angat added a bonus feature – a monster that is controlled by remote control. “I activate it when the kids go to grab their candy,” Angat tells us. “It also has a motion sensor for when I’m busy.”
We love that kind of failsafe back-up: When Angat is too busy to coax a gentle scare from trick-or-treaters, there’s a motion sensor to coax a gentle scare from trick-or-treaters! Perfect!
Great work, Angat! We know your creations will bring joy to the trick-or-treaters who come to your home. And we look forward to seeing what else you will be creating this Halloween!
