Greetings from sunny San Diego! To give even more of you a glimpse of Zombie Invasion!, our crew has made the trek to the world famous San Diego Comic-Con (and the San Diego Zombie Walk, which just so happens to take place at the same time). For the past few days, we’ve been busy tricking out our newly-rented AtmosFEARfx van and turning it into one of the coolest mobile projection vehicles on the road.
Our “Zombie Containment Unit” is equipped with four different projectors, each displaying a different decoration on our back and side windows, and a stereo system that allows us to crank out some truly horrifying sound effects.
Last night, we suited up in gas masks and hazmat suits and cruised around the busy streets of downtown, surprising convention attendees, outdoor diners, and other night owls with a showcase of scenes from Zombie Invasion!, Creepy Crawlies 2, Shades of Evil, and more. We had a blast seeing everyone’s reactions, which ranged from surprise to excitement to amazement. One girl even dropped a pizza that she was carrying so she could grab her cell phone to get a shot of the van! How cool is that?
In addition to these nightly driving adventures, we’ll also be hanging outside of the convention center for the next few afternoons, handing out sets of our “Zombie Survival Tips (for Zombies)” cards and spreading the word about Zombie Invasion! Paul and I will be in full-on zombie mode, and Pete, Cameron, and Mark will be our “handlers”. Keep an eye out for us!
For those of you who can’t make it out to chat with us in person, check out our very first behind-the-scenes preview video for Zombie Invasion! In this introduction, creative director Pete Reichert talks about what motivated us to start this fun project and gives a preview of the extensive development that goes into creating an effect of this caliber.
When we get back to Seattle next week, we’ll release the next video in this series, which goes into detail about how we created the make-up effects for our shoot.
We hope to see some of you at the convention this week. You stay classy, San Diego. ;)
