We’ve seen plenty of massive full-house projection mapping displays for Halloween. But Easter? Not so much. Then again, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised to see that Peter L., from Medford, New Jersey, has done exactly that, given his productivity! As you can see from Peter’s YouTube Channel, he is something of a prolific decorator when it comes to projection mapping. Not only does he have Halloween, Christmas and Independence Day displays – but he’s even made some for Groundhog Day, Veterans Day, and for many of the Philadelphia-area professional sports teams. Many of them utilize AtmosFX Decorations, if you look closely.
What is projection mapping? We get it – to take a look at Peter’s home, it is hard to get a complete sense of what, exactly, we are looking at … aside from some really cool animation.
In its simplest form, projection mapping is the technique of projecting onto something other than a flat, white screen to create a three-dimensional effect. In Peter’s case, that “screen” is his entire house. Essentially, he figures out where he will place his projector, and then takes a digital image of his house. He then uses projection-mapping software to create a digital outline of his house, into which he can drop in all sorts of still and video images, including AtmosFX Decorations like Hoppy Easter. Everything inside that digital outline becomes a canvas onto which he can create animated displays and project onto his house, and anything outside that digital outline doesn’t display at all.
Needless to say, there are a lot of online tools and resources to learn more about the technique, and plenty of projection mapping software – both free and for a fee – available online. And even though it might look like it, you don’t have to become an expert in digital post-production techniques to create something cool.
But of course, if you want to put the time in – and it sure looks to us that Peter has totally put the time in – you can make something truly unique, like this display that celebrates the joys of Easter.
