Forget about checking under the bed for ghosts – or under the hood, for that matter! AtmosFAN Alan B.’s hatchback is where the ghosts are! The Durham, North Carolina, resident found a way to pack a whole cemetery – complete with some playful spirits – into the back of his car as part of his innovative “trunk-or-treat” display. At the heart of Alan’s spectral spectacle is the Boo Crew Decoration Collection employed through the classic “Pepper’s ghost” effect. This centuries-old technique uses reflections on an angled piece of glass to make it look as though objects are appearing and disappearing in mid-air. In the case of Alan’s car, he’s angled the pane of glass towards the open hatchback, which reflects the ghosts of Boo Crew displayed on a monitor on the floor.
Of course, you can’t see all that because of Alan’s masterfully crafted miniature graveyard that he’s set up in the foreground. Weathered tombstones stand sentinel, their eerie presence amplified by the warm glow of flickering candles.
The Pepper’s ghost effect gives the entire trunk-or-treat display incredible depth – and, of course, adds a true sense of magic. “Kids and kids at heart – adults – were amazed,” Alan tells us, “and the number-one question was ‘how did you do that?’”We love how Alan’s innovative trunk-or-treat setup demonstrates the versatility of AtmosFX Decorations. By thinking outside the box – or in this case, inside the trunk – he has created a unique and memorable Halloween experience. His combination of digital effects, practical props, and a classic illusion technique can add a little mystery to any Halloween decoration display – even one in the back of a car!
