We’ve always been fans of the humble garage. Most people seem to be satisfied to use it to stash their cars, recycling bins and half-empty cans of paint. But decorators like AtmosFAN Kelly M. know garages have soooooo much potential. After all, when the garage door is lowered at his Phoenix, Arizona, home, it becomes an enormous canvas where anything is possible. In this case, it becomes an ancient crypt that sets the stage for everything else in his Halloween display.
Kelly’s display is a great example showing that sometimes the biggest projection surface in your home is hiding in plain sight. Projected onto the garage door, of course, is Crypt of Creeps Decoration, which transforms the entire display into an immersive subterranean dungeon, complete with strange half-dead creepsters lurking in the shadows. Using this simple display mode instantly creates captivating depth to Kelly’s entire Halloween display.
Kelly would not stop there. We love how the projected image becomes the foundation for a much larger scene. Rather than simply projecting onto the garage door and calling it finished, the medieval theme is extended by adding fake stone walls on either side of the garage, extending the illusion even further along the house. The dungeon-like stonework even includes a shackled skeleton, adding yet another creepy layer.
Elsewhere, there’s fog effects, electric candelabras and even the Brooding Butler from Halloween Hosts Decoration Collection trapped in a cardboard crypt. It all looks great.
Kelly does a wonderful job demonstrating how a single well-placed projection can serve as the anchor for the entire decoration display. By using Crypt of Creeps as the starting point and then building outward with complementary props and extensions, Kelly has created visual depth that makes trick-or-treaters and Halloween guests feel like they’re something otherworldly rather than a typical garage.
“Parents and kids alike were really amazed with how everything looked – ‘really unreal,’” Kelly tells us.
